How It Works

The Choral Speech Effect occurs when people who stutter, speak in unison with others and their stutter is dramatically reduced or even eliminated.

Almost every Person Who Stutters knows this and has experienced the choral speech effect in settings like reading aloud with your class, or saying a prayer with others.

The FluencyPod™ uses one key software – Delayed Auditory Feedback (An echo of your voice repeated after a short delay).

Delay time
70 Milliseconds

Delayed Auditory Feedback creates the choral speech effect by making the perception that one is speaking in unison with others.

Clinical Studies

"Results confirm that DAF is an effective means of reducing stuttering. They also suggest that DAF continues to promote fluency over a longer period." Van Borsel, J., Reunes, G. and Van den Bergh, N.,
2003

"The proportion of stuttered syllables was reduced by approximately 90% during reading and 67% during monologue with the device relative to no device."
Stuart, A., Kalinowski, J., Rastatter, M. P., Saltuklaroglu, T., and Dayalu, V., 2004

"Choral speech is an undeniable phenomenon that immediately induces fluent and natural sounding speech in almost all people who stutter." Kalinowski, J. and Saltuklaroglu, T.,
2003

"The conditions of auditory feedback resulted in speech benefits in both groups, decreasing the number of stuttering-like disfluencies." Fiorin M, Marconato E, Palharini TA, Picoloto LA, Frizzo ACF, Cardoso ACV, Oliveira CMC., 2021

Another example of the choral speech effect can be seen in the film The King’s Speech. During his trial sessions with different speech therapists, one therapist had him read aloud while listening to music. Hearing this fluent recording of his own voice helped him improve his speech immediately. This experience encouraged him to return to that particular speech therapist.
